I have a garden swing/hammock the paint is flaking off revealing rusty bare metal.?
Is there anyway of halting this deterioration using some sort of fixant/ primer and then using something such as Hammerite to repaint. It is very large and fiddly so stripping it is really out of the question.
just rub it down and hammerite it

Hammerite is the answer.

take it to a poweder coaters and get them to either touch up the bits or have the entire thing re -coated , it doesnt cost a great deal.
hammerite looks pants although it will stop the rust.
poweder coaters dont cost much

Rub off the rust with emery paper, paint on a primer, and then you could give it a coat of enamel paint, if you use Hammerite it will turn the metal black, but then you could rub that down and spray with a can of car spray paint, after giving it a coat of primer, hope that helps, good luck.

If you don't remove the rust and only over paint it you may hold the deterioration off but you need to remove the rust and get back to bare metal before over painting with something like hammerite you wont make the most of your efforts.

remove the flaking and two coats of hammerite should halt the deterioration.

If only a swing, sand off the excess flaky bits and to give the other areas a key. As long as no flakes then old paint left will not harm. Paint with a red-oxide (i think called this) metal under coat primer. (D.I.Y.) store would know. Then paint as desired with an outside paint with 2 coats. 4 what need should be fine.

Sand it to remove all the loose flakey rust & loose paint as best you can. Wipe it down with a water based cleaner. Let dry. Seal it with 2 thin coats of Rustseal. (An 8oz can covers 12 sq.ft. with 2 coats)
The KBS Sysyem Sampler is a good buy for about $16.
